Our lives are busy. For many of us, there are few moments in a typical week where we stop, take a breath and soak in the moment… and be totally at peace.

The most satisfying part of being a photographer is enabling those moments to be savoured and enjoyed.

For regular readers of our blog you’ll be familiar with our Engagement Sessions. Over the past couple of months I’ve been enjoying referring to them as Connection Sessions instead. I feel it conveys what the time entails much better.

Jeff and Rachel are a two of a kind. Sweet, thoughtful, kind and always easy with a laugh. In planning their Connection Session we talked about their love of things whimsical, their love of good tea, their swing dancing and the Aussie bush.

Together we chose two locations meaningful to them – Kings Park to start out – with the rich aromas of gum leaves and the sound of leaves rustling…. and later on, King Street… But we’ll get to that 🙂

Jeff and Rachel spend much of their time reading together – whether it’s the fiction they’d prefer or long nights with their noses in heavy text books for uni. So while planning this wonderful picnic Rachel packed some vintage books for them to peruse.

As I always do, I invite the couple to experiment with their senses and see if they’re able to more fully be present in the current moment. The soft touch of the others hand, the beat their their heart. Simple acts like sharing a cup of tea each day are the little daily rituals that so many happily married old couples share, and I love that.

One of the most valuable things any couple can share is their laughter and joy… Something Rachel and Jeff have and abundance of. For this portion of the session we walked down to the Kings Park Botanical Gardens. It’s a really nice area for photography – with a diversity of plants and textures to use as backdrops.

Some of Rachel’s first memories as a young girl were of standing under a gum tree and loving the potent smell… So it was perfect that they were able to share some sweet moments under a ghost gum.

I love playing with scale in my photography and Kings Park offers some really cool opportunities for that…

After a wonderful time in Kings Park, Jeff & Rachel did a wardrobe change and we headed into their favourite part of town – King Street. As they wandered the streets they found some cool little locations…. Check out this cool little art gallery.

Don’t Jeff & Rachel look snazzy?? You really can’t beat King Street for the incredible architecture.

Rachel brought some balloons which made a really cool prop for some of the photos… Love the pop of colour.

Have you ever noticed that in movies they always wet the pavement? It’s one of those movie tricks that now that I’ve told you about, you’ll see it all the time. In these shots of them dancing below you can see how much dimensionality the reflections bring to the photos… Cool eh?

Jeff & Rachel popped into their favourite collectible book shop and enjoyed a few minutes chilling out together.

Before wrapping up their engagement shoot, they headed into their main hang out spot – King Street Cafe. The atmosphere is so European and the coffee is delicious 😉 I love seeing two people with so much love in their eyes. Don’t you love how they look at each other?

Thanks for an amazingly fun engagement session Rachel & Jeff!! I can’t wait for your wedding day!! It’s going to be AMAZING.

Dave.

If you liked seeing Rosanna and Wayne’s connection session in Yallingup on the blog, then you’ll love seeing them in their very special wedding day post! Check out their gorgeous wedding that took place at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Busselton and the fabulous Bunker Bay Resort near Dunsborough.

It was a lovely start to the day, the sky was the most beautiful sapphire blue and there was a wedding day buzz in the air. All of the girls were ready for Rosanna’s very special day and you could see what a meaningful time it was for everyone at Rosie’s house. The flowers were crisp and fresh and Rosie looked like a starlet in her gown.

The boys weren’t looking too bad themselves and you could see the excitement the groom and groomsmen were feeling for the big day ahead.

Part of the fun was arriving to St Joseph’s Catholic Church in this amazing vintage car. Classic cars always make a glamorous entrance, don’t they? It was pretty clear that the bridal car was full of old friends that really knew how to make each other laugh!

It always makes such a meaningful wedding ceremony when the couple knows their priest well. Rosie grew up with her priest and he had lots of great moments from Rosie’s life to share with the wedding guests!

After a beautiful ceremony we went out for some wedding portrait fun around Meelup, Yallingup and Bussleton Jetty. Oh, and don’t forget the surf shop that Rosie and Wayne loved from their pre-wedding engagement pictures.

What a beautiful group of girls! Don’t they just glow with their pretty parasols…

You can’t beat Meelup Beach! I loved the rich orange rocks against the azure water! Such a stunning natural backdrop!

What a sweet way to greet your wedding guests. Everyone loved the candy bar and what a pretty display it made. I’ll confess I had a couple of visits myself!!

Bunker Bay Resort is such a great spot for a wedding. Such a lovely location and everyone really enjoys the excuse to stay in such a fabulous resort!

We caught these flower girls giggling about our gorgeous bride. Such a sweet little moment.

When the dancing began, everyone let loose and had a fantastic time dancing the night away. It was really nice seeing all the guests at the wedding on the dance floor.

You can’t beat the evening sky you get out this way. You see so many stars and it sets a magical stage for a romantic wedding reception. Thanks to Rosie and Wayne for asking us to be a part of your beautiful Bunker Bay wedding!

Since moving back to Perth in February last year, Charlotte and I have been really excited about booking so many weddings down south. We’ve love shooting at Wise Winery, Bunker Bay and lots of others in the Margaret River region. We were booked in shooting a gorgeous wedding in Bunker Bay and decided to tie in Rosanna & Wayne’s Engagement Photo Shoot on the same trip. This worked out really well because they’re also getting married in the Dunsborough area at Quay West Resort Bunker Bay!

There were several locations that we all wanted to check out together, so we cruised around in one car and just enjoyed getting to know each other a bit. Because Rosanna & Wayne booked us over email, it was a great chance to get to know them a little and the shoot felt like a fun double date! These first few photos are at Wise Winery. Such a relaxed and beautiful vineyard… The light right before sunset is always so romantic.

Next we all cruised down to Yallingup to check out an old surf shop that’s painted in wacky blue and pink stripes… Cute eh?

After having a bit of fun together, Wayne pulled Rosie around the side and had a bit of quieter cuddle with her.

As the sun started to set, we went looked for the best photography vantage point to soak it all in…

Being in nature this time of day is so spiritual. You really get a lot of gorgeous, relaxed photography when the world around you looks so peaceful. I love this sequence…

These natural smiles and laughs are so much fun, we love catching these moments!!

We really felt like we captured the true essence of these two… Their personalities really shine through and capturing their real expressions is a big part of why we love what we do so much!

Thanks so much for the great time guys. We had a blast at your Bunker Bay wedding and we really loved having the chance to photograph the two of you! Stay turned for more great images from Rosie and Wayne’s wedding!

If you are a frequent reader of our blog you may be aware that we have been running a competition this month giving away 4 free portrait photo sessions. The first shoot to take place was Kailee & Liam’s Couple Shoot at AQWA at Hillarys Boat Harbour in Sorrento. Charlotte and I had an absolute ball doing this photo shoot for them… You see they have a similar situation to Charlotte and I… Like Charlotte, Kailee is of Canadian origin and Liam’s an Aussie like myself. In fact, it’s crazy what a small world it is…. Kailee’s sister is a talented photographer in Canada where we spend half our year!

We kicked of the shoot by heading over to AQWA, which is right across from our Perth studio. We made a bee-line for the jelly fish to create some really romantic backlit portraits of them against the jellies. Looks awesome eh!?

Next we all wandered downstairs to the tunnel that goes under the shark tank!! It’s a pretty amazing feeling to have sharks, sting rays and various other reef fish swimming within feet of you!

You can see how close the stingray is as it swam overhead! Amazing eh!?

Kailee and Liam aren’t engaged (yet!), but we’ve got our fingers crossed that when they decide to get married they’ll have us do their wedding photography! And hopefully at AQWA!!

What a damn sexy couple these guys make.

In the Danger Zone area of AQWA we got to see some incredibly colourful marine life… sea horses, angel fish, occies and lots more.

Notice the stormy conditions on the ocean in the photo above… This is one of the reasons we chose AQWA for the shoot… nothing better than avoiding the wind and rain!

The next photo has to be one of the best photos of the whole shoot… I love how the 3 sharks are all soaring above them. So cool.

Charlotte’s always coming up with really creative and interesting poses and photo ideas.. I love how ethereal and soft this photograph of their reflection in the tank turned out. Gorgeous.

After the photo shoot we headed back to our house as the beach shoot we had planned was rained out! You may remember the seriously intense storms that blew in about 10 days ago? Well this was that day!

Sitting on our couch they looked like models. The light was just perfect for creating some relaxed, natural light portraits.

I know I’ve said it before, but Liam & Kailee make a damn sexy couple right?!

Some of my favourite photos from the day are these next two… they just look so happy together!

Before wrapping up the shoot we stepped out onto our balcony and let the wind redo Kailee’s hair for her! I love gritty black and white portraits.

That’s it for now… Look forward to sharing some of the photos from the wedding we photographed this past weekend at Wise Winery in Dunsborough.

In planning Pat & Rebecca’s engagement photography we chatted about a venue that would allow them to unwind and feel most relaxed together… King Street in Perth turned out to be the perfect location. Before I kick off I want to fast forward and show you the best photo of the shoot… and it’s one of the last we took.. Check it out.

Rewinding to the start of the photo shoot, we began by wandering along King Street, passing some of Charlotte’s favourite shops… Tiffanys, Louis Vuitton & Gucci… So many amazing frontages and window displays.

I took these next engagement portraits standing in front of Gucci, using the lights from the window display… I love the contrast it creates in the colour of lighting.

Walking down the alleyway next to Zomp we arrived at the King Street Arts Centre where we created some really unique photos!! I was very impressed with Patrick’s willingness to try out a stop motion idea I had… the resulting series is really quite hilarious!

After a quiet beer together we headed down to the Sir James Mitchell Park on the South Perth Esplanade to finish up their engagement photo shoot with some really dramatic photos of the Perth skyline in the background.

Patrick & Rebecca are tying the knot this coming weekend in Dunsborough and having their reception at Wise Winery… Charlotte and I are making the most of it with a 4 day get away to unwind and get into the Margaret River vibe. I’m so looking forward to their wedding on Saturday! It’s going be be amazing. Will have photos to share with you all soon 🙂
